Algal Diversity

Learning objectives:
  • understand the phylogenetic breadth of the ‘algae’ (prokaryotes and eukaroytes, with algae present in 4 of the supergroups of the Eukaryota.
  • understand the three life cycles (diplontic, haplodiplontic, haplonitc). There are examples of each in the material covered in the lab class. Note: error in the Polysiphonia lifecycle as depicted in the text. The ploidy level of male and female gametophytes is ‘n’ and not 2n as depicted.
  • appreciate the diversity of algal of the Sydney region.
